Course: Lion's Trail loop, from Caliente
Description: This ride is usually done clockwise, however I gave hill stats going both directions in the ride profile starting at Caliente Creek Post Office, the Lion's Trail climb begins just three miles down the road. Go left at the Y. Lion's Trail is one of the most challenging climbs in Kern County. It is a 6.7 mile climb averaging 7.5% gradient. If gravity is your enemy then this climb could take you an hour and half to complete. The fast downhill into beautiful Walker Basin passes by Rankin Ranch and a old cemetery. A steady climb up to the fire station is accented by a short and steep(15%) hill. The long downhill follows the Caliente Creek through Caliente Canyon. The Canyon is breathtaking and has been ravaged by sever floods over its history. The past years the road condition have improved. The road ends up at the Y. Continue back to the Caliente Post Office.

Course: Round Mountain
Description: Starting at Beach Park this ride can be done either clockwise or counterclockwise. The ccw direction is more difficult than cw.
In the ccw direction from Beach Park travel east along the bike trail next to the Kern River. Follow the bike trail until Derrels Mini Storage, Turn left after the small canal bridge. Turn left again on to Gordon's Ferry. After crossing a large bridge over the Kern River take a right on to Round Mt. Road.
The climb begins 6 miles down the road. It's 4 miles long with an average 3.5% grade. The decent is rough with three cattle guards so keep your head up. After the downhill you meander through Poso Valley. Then take a left turn onto Woody Granite Road. Here the "Poso climb-south" or the "3 mile climb" starts.
After climbing to the 'mail boxes' the long decent back to Bakersfield takes you through the oilfields until the left turn onto James Road. Take another left on N. Chester and yet another onto Manor and proceed down to the bike trail. Take the bike trail back to Beach Park. The road was resurfaced in early 2004. Yeah!!
